Thursday 21st September 2017 Walk Report.
25 members set off from The Royal Oak in Blisworth for 7
mile walk over to Stoke Bruerne and back.
The weather was mild with a gentle breeze and the rain held off until
half way through lunch.
The route took us down to the Grand Union Canal and along to
the entrance of the Blisworth Tunnel.
Here we had a bit of history about the building of the tunnel and how
prior to its existence the barges unloaded their cargo and took it over the
fields on a tramway pulled by horses to be reloaded on another barge at the
other end. The opening of the tunnel
linked London to Braunston.
Originally
the barges were legged through the tunnel before steam tugs were
introduced. Today the tunnel is the
longest self guided tunnel on the canal network and is two way although does
not have a tow path.
Our walking route took us over the adjoining fields on a
bridleway which unfortunately had seen many horses in the last few days and was
extremely churned up and muddy.
Eventually we arrived at the south end of the tunnel and walked along
the tow path to Stoke Bruerne. This is an attractive tourist area with boat trips, locks, café and a
blacksmiths.
After a short break we headed back using a different route
which took us over newly sown fields and passed numerous blackberry bushes, the
fruits of which were enjoyed by many!
The weary party arrived back for lunch at the pub, just
before the rains started, and were joined by David and Ann.
Thanks to Sue and Peter H for organising and leading this walk and thanks to Sue for providing the report.

Saturday 16th September Walk Reoort.
Six members joined the X4 bus getting off at Delapre Park Gates where our walk commenced. It was an enjoyable start to the walk viewing the beautiful ornimental gardens. Some of us then went into the cafe which forms part of the main Delapre Abbey building (in order to use the facilities)Our route continued by walking around Delapre lake before heading down to the Bedford Road taking the path which at the moment has been partially diverted because of the building of the new Northampton University building. We then walked through the grounds of St Andrews hospital entering via the Workbridge complex close by Barnes meadow roundabout. We took the opportunity to visit the hospital chapel (beautiful stone victorian building )and then continued on our way passing the original hospital buildings (historic John Clare connection) before reaching Abington park walking via the Billing Rd and Abington Avenue South.
We enjoyed lunch at the park cafe .Good service despite being busy and the food was good too. We visited the park museum (based in the old manor house) The half hour visit was inadequate as there was so much of interest to see, certainly worth a return visit. We continued the walk by crossing the road and walking around one of the lakes before retracing our steps back up to Park Avenue. We completed the walk by heading up to the Kettering Rd where we caught the X10 bus from the bus stop in front of the Morrisons supermarket. Most of the day the weather was good although 5 minutes before we got to the bus stop we had a hail storm.A brief soaking was had by all! People on the walk were surprised at the interesting history of Northampton that is relatively unknown particularly Delapre Abbey and park.
Looking forward to meeting up on the Weekend. Otherwise see you all on our next walk Saturday October 24th around the Gumley area?
Chairman's Note: Thanks to David S for organising and leading this walk and for providing this report

Thursday 7th September Walk Report.
18 walkers including one potential new member ( welcome Roger) set off on a lovely early Autumn morning from the Vane Arms at Sudborough. The route took them via roads and fields to towards Lowick where some of the group were amazed to see the vineyard on the outskirts of the village. Whilst this has been in existence for a few years it is not known if the first vintage has been produced. Perhaps with the increasing reputation enjoyed by English wines Chateau Lowick will be up there with the best of them. From Lowick the route took them to Drayton House where Margaret B gave an interesting talk on its history. The banana break was taken within sight of Slipton and then via a longish road walking stretch back to the Vane Arms where and excellent lunch was had by all. Thanks to Margaret B and Sue C for organising and leading a most enjoyable walk.
